3 OTC Meds with Side Effects

These three over-the-counter medications can cause side effects in people 60+ that are important to be aware of.

1: Pepcid (famotidine)

  • When you drink with Pepcid, it interacts with alcohol, and blood levels of alcohol can get higher
  • This can impair your ability to think, drive, and do other things
  • In a breathalyzer test, the same amount of alcohol will produce a different alcohol level when taken with Pepcid

2: Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine)

  • Sudafed can elevate the blood pressure, potentially off-setting blood pressure medications you may be taking
  • In men with an enlarged prostate, Sudafed may interrupt urinary flow

3: Benadryl (diphenhydramine)

  • Benadryl can cause side effects like dry mouth and confusion

Always make your doctor aware of all of the medications that you’re taking, including over-the-counter medications.
